Label Replacement and Database Importing
Situation
Customer manually applying labels to boxes; label information generated from a centralized database (e.g. SAP, etc.).
Approach
Smart-Jet® HEX print controller with four (4) PRO printheads installed on conveyor to print the the information directly on the box. Information includes product descriptions and mulitple bar codes.
Issues
Manually applying labels decreased productivity and added extra steps in the production process. That is in addition to the overall added cost of the physical labels. Additionally, labels negatively impact the recycling process, as the adhesive residue causes problems in the recycling industry, ranging from low-quality products, blocked water systems, and damaged recycling machinery. Another key issue was getting the information from the central database to the printer. Using a combination of a downloaded Excel file and a readily available application called Hercules (https://www.hw-group.com/software/hercules-setup-utility), the operators can easily configure the string of data to be sent to the printer for that particular production run. This setup can handle thousands of products easily and efficiently.
Results
Customer is printing directly on the box, eliminating the need to manually apply labels. This has reduced the additional labor required for manual label application, and has eliminated the label cost per box. The direct printed cartons are also easier and more efficient to recycle.
